Reading the author bio explained the mix of American and UK language which was as word as it was pleasant
The first chapter deals with finding of a mutilated child’s body the author does well to build suspense in the first few lines, its also a very brave way to start a debut novel.
We move onto the compounding grief of the parents as the killer uploads a recording of the kill to the internet for some very shady people to voyeur and make comments.
The emotions run deep as the father, Billy, spirals down in to self-torture, constantly watching and reading viewers comments, there was one scene where he found a blogger and played out a scenario with him that I found not only unbelievable but did not sit well with the character formed up until then or the story line generally, especialy as it went nowhere subsequently.
One dreay night in the local Tavarn he meets Dr Verity. Life for Billy then changes as he becomes part of strange new cosmic balancing act with the chance seek and play out revenge, but as the old saying goes, be careful what you wish for.
Billy the father Marlon the bar tender Rena missing son, drug addict, sex, pregnant Megan first wife mother of Nelson Fedora man laughing man
Wolves showing fur.lined beds unless it was rabbit fur that’s a revolting thought
The timeline jumps about a bit too much for me at the beginning, often with min by min one moment and years/months jumping through to the next Drug fuelled rollercoaster
As the ending draws I was getting very confused but totally absorbed, however the last few chapters bring the whole thing togetherit and make perfect sense; a second reading shows how almost perfect this story is with its ideas and complexity, I would recommend a one sit read.
“After the brutal murder of his son is broadcast over the internet, Billy Kingston becomes consumed with alcoholism and thoughts of revenge. But his outlook changes when a divine being named Dr. Verity offers Billy the chance to not only find the man responsible for his pain but to remove him from this world before he can commit the murder. When the deal with Verity takes a wrong turn, Billy moves to the small, remote town of Benton Lake and the chance of a new life.”
Takes you to some very uncomfy places, sometimes the physical horror is hinted at but often its like a slap round the face with a wet fish, all the while undermined by some serious emotional wrenching.
