Tara Nikkel and the Dream Mage
Tara Nikkel is a thirteen year-old girl with a bit of a problem—she’s dead. That’s not the end of her story though, it’s just the beginning. Join Tara on a fantasy adventure packed to the gills with enough goblins, zombies, and laughs to keep you hooked right up to the thrilling conclusion. Ages 13+.
Meet Tara: she’s a thirteen year girl with cerebral palsy and other crippling ailments who wanders out in a storm to find her lost dog. Through an unfortunate turn of events, Tara travels to the afterlife where she learns that she is, in fact, a powerful sorceress who has been chosen by the Guild for an important mission. Her story is about suffering and overcoming pain in the face of fear. Tara Nikkel battles a whole host of monsters in the first book of this new series written by acclaimed fantasy author R.A. Sapp.
R.A. Sapp lives in beautiful Orange County, California. He is married to Rebecca and together they have two children–Abigail (The Healer) and Christian (The Wizard). In addition to reading and writing, Mr. Sapp enjoys running and mountain biking. He has run several half-marathons (including completing the Beach Cities Challenge in 2014) and hopes to complete a triathlon someday. The real Tara was my sister who passed away just before her thirteenth birthday. It has been a lifelong dream of mine to give her an adventure series of her own.
Tara Nikkel and the Dream Mage
I would like to tell you the story behind Tara Nikkel and the Dream Mage. You see there was, in fact, a real Tara.
She was my sister.
The real Tara passed away September 10, 1998 just before she would have turned thirteen years old. Her death brought an end to a life filled with suffering. I think it’s fair to say that Tara got a raw deal in this life. For years I dreamed about giving her a story of her own, a new story. A story where she would be strong and healthy and heroic. That is where the idea for these books was born. I wanted to give my sister another chance at life…a life in the really real world (the afterlife fantasy realm of TNATDM).
Live long enough and you will lose someone you love. My heart goes out to parents, siblings, and friends who have lost someone too soon. Death is never easy. It leaves cracks in our foundation that lay dormant for lengths of time and then suddenly we crumble unexpectedly. I have experienced a bit of this in my life, some of the other characters in TNATDM are tributes to other special people who died too soon. I don’t have the answers or the words to give comfort to people who are suffering. But giving Tara another chance at life has been a wonderful journey for me, and I hope that it gives you some happiness too.
Let’s share our stories as a tribute to the ones we’ve lost.
